“The Box at I.V. Theater” is a new and exciting student-curated, student art exhibition space sponsored by Isla Vista Arts and the Art, Design & Architecture Museum UC Santa Barbara (formerly known as the University Art Museum).
The inaugural exhibition “Back-to-School Special” (2011) by UCSB Department of Art MFA Candidate Van C. Tran is installed in the Isla Vista Theater lobby throughout Fall 2011. Tran's dynamic mixed media work is inspired by her own UC experience and individual students’ undergraduate experiences within the UC system. The artwork, comprised of a large-scale drawing and text excerpts, is a reflection on some of the student responses that she has recently collected. Intended as an open-ended project, “Back-to-School Special” invites students to briefly write about their campus experience on provided index cards which can be submitted in a response box. Selected responses will be displayed throughout the duration of the exhibition.
Van C. Tran’s work focuses on varied relationships through different processes of drawing, painting and performance art. Tran previously attended University of California, San Diego where she received her BA, with Honors, in Visual Art (Studio) and is currently a Teaching Assistant for the UCSB Department of Art while she completes her graduate degree. Her previous artistic projects include exhibitions within the UCSD community, Los Angeles and Santa Ana, writing for EyeBall Burp (a do-it-yourself zine publication) and interning for the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest.
“The Box at I.V. Theater” is currently accepting applications for future student art exhibitions, and it is open to undergraduate and graduate students of any major or discipline.
